Gerald Dunne, serving 26 years for murder, is critically ill after collapsing in prison, raising concerns about his health.
Dublin: So, this guy Gerald Dunne, who’s been in prison for nearly 26 years, just collapsed in his cell. It happened around Christmas, and now he’s in the hospital, really sick.
He was found unconscious in Wheatfield Prison on December 28. No one really knows why he collapsed, but it was serious enough that he was fighting for his life for a few days.
There were some scary moments when folks thought he might not make it, but it seems like he’s a bit better now. Still, he’s not out of the woods yet.
Dunne, who’s 49, has been locked up since January 1999 for murdering a guy named Liam Thompson. They had a fight over a call box, and it ended tragically.
He went through a bunch of trials before finally being convicted in 2004. It’s a wild story, really. The whole thing started after a funeral when some family members went for a drink and ended up in a fight.
During the scuffle, Dunne stabbed Thompson, and it was pretty brutal. The medical examiner said Thompson had a fatal stab wound to his heart. Just awful.
Dunne has spent most of his time in Wheatfield Prison, and he’s had his share of trouble there too. Back in 2017, they found a makeshift knife in his cell, which he claimed was planted.
He tried to fight that in court but lost. Now, with his health in such a bad state, it’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
