Guildford: Work has officially begun on a project to enhance over 7km of walkways and cycle paths connecting Guildford and Godalming. For the next two months, expect temporary traffic lights and some overnight road closures.

This initiative, known as the Guildford to Godalming Greenway, aims to create safer and more accessible routes for cyclists and pedestrians. It’s a project led by Surrey County Council, and it’s all about making it easier for folks to get around while enjoying the outdoors.

The first phase kicked off on January 13, focusing on the A3100 between New Pond Road and Broadwater Lake. The plan includes widening the footpath to accommodate both cyclists and pedestrians, plus adding a signal crossing near Tilthams Corner Road.

While the work is in progress, drivers will have to deal with temporary traffic lights until March 16. There might also be some overnight closures, but the council promises to keep everyone updated with signs on-site.

Looking ahead, this is just the first phase. More work is expected to start in 2025, but the exact dates are still to be announced. So, keep an eye out for updates!

Phase one will involve several improvements, like extending the shared footpath along the A3100 and adding new crossings. There are also plans for better routes to local schools and parks, making it easier for everyone to get around safely.

In addition, the Dagley Lane section of the Greenways route is set for an upgrade. This area can be tricky to navigate when it’s wet, so the council is working on making it more user-friendly.

Overall, this project is a big step towards better cycling and walking routes in the area, and it’s great to see the community getting involved in making it happen!
