A teacher who drove under the influence and caused an accident will keep her job despite the incident
A good Samaritan actually stopped her from driving further by taking her keys. The police showed up, and she was arrested. Not long after, she was convicted, fined, and banned from driving for 18 months.
Eleanor had been working as a supply teacher at Baskerville School, which helps kids with special needs, since March 2021. Fast forward to December 2022, and the Teacher Regulation Agency got involved.
Recently, a hearing decided she wouldn’t face a ban from teaching. The panel felt she understood her mistake and had taken steps to ensure it wouldn’t happen again. Plus, there hadn’t been any issues since her conviction.
Sarah Buxcey from the TRA mentioned that Eleanor completed a three-day drink-driving course, learning about the serious effects of driving under the influence. She also noted that Eleanor had grown a lot personally over the past couple of years.
The panel believed it was important to keep her in the profession since she’s a valuable educator, especially in special needs. They felt a prohibition order wasn’t necessary and that making the findings public would send a strong message about acceptable behavior.
Baskerville House is a school for kids aged 11 to 19 with autism and learning difficulties, so it’s great to see them keeping dedicated teachers like Eleanor on board.
