Several dogs have tragically died and others sickened after visiting popular Cornwall beaches. Owners are urged to exercise caution in Newquay.
Newquay Town Council knows about it. They told people to contact Cornwall Council. Cornwall Council manages the land. The cause of the illness is still unclear.
Some think it is from poisoning. Palm oil or hemlock root might be to blame. Both were reported along the north coast this winter. Palm oil is bad for dogs if they eat lots. Hemlock root is very toxic.
Take dogs to the vet fast if exposed. Owners never saw their dogs eat anything odd. So, it may be something else entirely. Dog symptoms include tiredness and vomiting. Problems can start suddenly.
Cornwall Council says hemlock roots washed up. This happened at Fistral and Little Fistral. Hemlock grows naturally in Cornwall. Winter rivers wash it to beaches. Signs will warn owners to be careful. They also want owners to keep dogs on leashes.
