According to Highway Code rule 57, dogs must be properly restrained in vehicles. This means using a harness, pet carrier, or dog cage. It’s all about keeping everyone safe, including your pup!
If a dog distracts you while driving and causes an accident, you could face that hefty £5,000 fine for careless driving. The rule is there to help prevent distractions and protect both the driver and the dog.
A recent survey by Auto Trader found that 34% of dog-owning drivers in Britain had no clue about these rules. Almost 25% admitted they don’t even bother to restrain their dogs when they’re on the road.
The Highway Code clearly states that pets should be restrained to avoid distractions while driving. If your dog is in the front seat, they need to be secured with a seat belt harness, and it’s best to disable the passenger airbag to keep them safe.
Unsecured pets can jump around, hit controls, or even climb over you while you’re driving, which is super dangerous. If caught, you could get an on-the-spot fine and even points on your license.
Last year, ChooseMyCar.com highlighted how many drivers are unaware of this rule. The founder, Nick Zapolski, pointed out that while it’s cute to see a dog with its head out the window, it’s a clear sign you’re not following the rules.
He also mentioned that in case of an accident, an unrestrained dog could get seriously hurt or cause harm to others in the car. It’s easy and affordable to get a seatbelt or a dog guard, and it can save you a lot of trouble down the line.
