A dog expert raises alarms about the Cane Corso breed’s rising popularity in the UK
Suffolk: A dog behaviour specialist is sounding the alarm about a breed that’s gaining traction in the UK. The Cane Corso, an Italian mastiff, is being compared to the XL bully but with even more potential danger.
With the XL bully facing restrictions, more people are looking at Cane Corsos as pets. This shift has experts worried, as they believe these dogs could be a bigger threat.
Rob Alleyne, who runs the Canine Instructor Academy, didn’t hold back. He called the Cane Corso “like an XL bully on steroids” and warned that their popularity is rising fast.
He pointed out that when the Pit Bull Terrier was banned, people turned to even more dangerous breeds. Now, he fears history is repeating itself with the Cane Corso.
His concerns come after a woman in her thirties needed plastic surgery after trying to break up a fight between her XL bully and Cane Corso at home. That incident really highlights the risks involved.
Currently, there are about 220 Cane Corso puppies listed for sale online, with prices ranging from £380 to £2,000. The expert believes this increase is a direct result of the restrictions on XL bullies.
Since February last year, owning an XL bully in the UK has been illegal unless you have an exemption certificate. This means owners must keep their dogs secure and muzzled in public.
