A doctor who punched a dementia patient has tried to apologise but insists he is innocent despite his conviction
Blackpool: So, there’s this doctor, Dr. Xowi Mwimbi, who got into some serious trouble for punching a dementia patient. It all went down back in August 2021 at Blackpool Victoria Hospital. The patient had a complex condition and, yeah, he used a racist term. But instead of just walking away, Dr. Mwimbi pushed the guy’s head and then threw a punch. Not cool, right?
He ended up in court, and the jury didn’t buy his self-defense claim. They found him guilty of ill-treatment, and he got a year in jail. Fast forward to now, and the General Medical Council is looking into whether he should still be practicing medicine after that conviction. Dr. Mwimbi is fighting back, saying he’s innocent, even though he’s accepted the conviction.
He’s been trying to reach out to the patient and his mom to say sorry, but it’s been a bit of a mess. While he was in prison, he couldn’t contact them, and even after he got out, he was told he still couldn’t. It’s a tough situation all around.
Interestingly, he kept working at the hospital until early 2022, even after the incident. Some staff were really shaken up by what they saw, saying it made them feel unsafe. Dr. Mwimbi has submitted a bunch of character references, claiming he’s a good doctor who wants to help vulnerable patients. He insists he was just trying to protect himself during the incident.
But the panel isn’t buying it. They’ve ruled that he’s not fit to practice, and now they’re deciding what to do next. It’s a wild story, and it’s not over yet.
