Swansea: A heartbreaking situation unfolded when a young girl found her parents passed out on the bathroom floor. In a panic, she called her grandparents, saying her mom and dad were “asleep.”
The little girl was clearly upset, crying as she explained she couldn’t wake them up. When the police arrived, they found a shocking scene with used heroin needles and drug paraphernalia scattered everywhere. It was clear the couple had no idea where their daughter was.
It turns out this was a regular routine for the parents. They would tuck their daughter in and then shoot up heroin. Both had been struggling with addiction for two decades. The mom even told officers she used heroin because she enjoyed the high.
This incident happened back in January last year, and now the girl is under an interim care order, living away from her parents, who are in their 30s and 40s.
When the grandparents arrived, the grandmother rushed to the girl, while the grandfather went to check on the parents. The mom was found in bed, slurring her words and not even aware of her daughter’s situation. The dad was in the bathroom, surrounded by needles, claiming he must have eaten something bad.
After the grandparents called the police, officers found the parents completely out of it. The mom thought her daughter was upstairs, not realizing she had gone to stay with her grandparents. The house was a mess, with needles and over 100 bottles of methadone lying around.
Both parents were arrested for child neglect. During questioning, the mom said they funded their drug habits through benefits and odd jobs. She insisted that their drug use didn’t affect her ability to care for her daughter.
The dad tried to downplay the situation, saying his daughter was overreacting. He mentioned that social services had advised them not to use heroin at the same time.
In court, it was revealed that both parents had a history of drug-related offenses. The dad had previous convictions for possession with intent to supply, while the mom had a record for serious offenses, including attempting to inflict harm.
During the hearing, the dad expressed deep regret for the distress caused to his daughter. He admitted that addiction had been a long struggle for him, but he had managed to stay clean for a while before falling back into it after his father’s death.
The judge described the case as disturbing, emphasizing the severe consequences of heroin addiction. He warned the couple that their chances of regaining custody of their daughter were slim due to their actions.
Ultimately, both parents received a suspended sentence of 12 months and were ordered to undergo rehabilitation. The mom was also required to complete community service, while the dad was deemed unfit for work due to health issues.
