Caerleon: I recently went to the Priory Hotel and Restaurant for a roast dinner, and wow, it was the best I’ve ever had in Newport.

This place is right in the heart of Caerleon, a charming Roman village. Locals love it for drinks and meals, and I can see why.

On Sundays, they offer a two-course roast for £25 or three courses for £30. You get seasonal veggies, gravy, and roast potatoes with your choice of lamb, chicken, beef, or crispy belly pork.

If you’re feeling extra hungry, you can add more roasties, pigs in blankets, stuffing, or cauliflower cheese. They even have vegetarian and pescetarian options.

We tried the beef, pork, and lamb, and let me tell you, everything was cooked just right. The beef was especially tender and delicious.

Gravy is available in abundance, along with mint sauce, apple sauce, and horseradish. We also ordered garlic focaccia, pigs in blankets, and stuffing, but honestly, the portions are huge on their own.

The stuffing was a standout, with a spicy chorizo twist that I hadn’t tasted before. For starters, we had croquettes and smoked salmon, but the starter menu changes weekly.

The starters were good and worth the price, but the main course is where it’s at if you decide to eat here.

I couldn’t find anything wrong with the service or the meal, and the prices felt really fair to me.

With some new staff and management, the Priory is making a great comeback, especially after ditching that annoying parking system.

The food and drink quality is top-notch, a big step up from my last visit a couple of years ago.

The vibe of the restaurant strikes a nice balance between fancy and casual, all at a reasonable price.

So, in my quest for the best roast in Newport, I think I’ve hit the jackpot on my very first try.
