Michael and Andrew transformed a derelict courthouse into a colorful masterpiece, showcasing their unique style on BBC Cymru Wales’ property program.
Powys: So, Michael and Andrew were on the hunt for a new home, wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of London. They had a soft spot for Wales, especially a remote area they loved.
Leaving behind their colorful London home was tough, but they were determined to find a place that felt just as vibrant. It was a tall order, but then luck struck!
They stumbled upon an old courthouse from 1654 that was in pretty rough shape. Michael recalls, “We bought it in 2013, and it was a total wreck. Cables were hanging, walls stripped, but the staircase was still there.”
With their backgrounds in architecture and design, they were the perfect duo to take on this challenge. They rolled up their sleeves and got to work, stripping it down to the bones and rebuilding it into a cozy home.
They added a sunroom with glass walls and even extended the building. Michael, now 78, mentioned they installed a ground source heat pump years ago when most people didn’t even know what it was!
Once the structure was solid, they unleashed their colorful vision. After over 50 years together, picking shades and styles was a breeze. They filled their home with their favorite colors and personal treasures.
Andrew, 79, chuckled about their paint shopping experience. They wanted specific tones without any black or white undertones. The paint specialist jokingly suggested they wanted “children’s colors,” and they happily agreed!
They even put a bold red tartan carpet in the mix, which might sound wild, but it totally works for them. Michael loves how the colors evoke joy and reflect their personalities.
Every room has its own vibe. They enjoy meals in the jade room and relax in the red room. The lemon yellow bedroom is a sunny delight, no matter the weather outside.
Nature inspired their color choices, with all the beautiful hues found in flowers and landscapes around Wales. They’ve created a home that feels like a vibrant art piece.
Visitors are often taken aback by the boldness of their design. Michael believes that most homes stick to white because it’s easy, but they wanted something that truly represents them.
In the end, it’s all about having fun with your space. Their home is a celebration of color and creativity, and they wouldn’t have it any other way!
Catch their colorful journey on BBC Cymru Wales’ property program, airing every Wednesday at 7pm. It’s a must-see for anyone who loves unique homes!
