Direct flights from Newcastle to Athens have been canceled, impacting travelers and the local Greek community.
Newcastle: So, it looks like the direct flights from Newcastle to Athens are no more. After two summers of connecting the North East to Greece, AEGEAN Airlines has decided to scrap the route.
These flights were a big deal, especially for folks in the North East with ties to Greece. They made it super easy to visit family back home without the hassle of changing planes in places like Paris or Amsterdam.
Last summer, the flights were a hit, and AEGEAN even planned to bring them back for 2024. They were set to fly every Wednesday and Sunday from May to October. But now, they’ve cut several routes, and sadly, Newcastle to Athens is one of them.
A spokesperson from Newcastle Airport mentioned that they were informed about this tough decision. They’re hoping to work with AEGEAN to bring the route back in the future.
For now, travelers can still get to Athens from Newcastle, but it’ll involve a stopover with airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, or Air France. ChronicleLive has reached out to AEGEAN for more info, but no word back yet.
