The UK Wild Otter Trust plans to rewild land in Devon, creating a sanctuary for otters and restoring local biodiversity through community support
Devon: The UK Wild Otter Trust is on a mission to rewild four acres of land in Devon. This area used to be for livestock grazing, but now it’s all about bringing back the wildlife, especially wild otters.
They’re teaming up with Aviva’s Community Fund to raise money. For every £10 donated, the fund will double it, meaning more cash for the project. It’s a great way for folks to help out.
Dave Webb, the founder of the trust, has been a conservationist for over 50 years. He’s seen how much our habitats have suffered and believes it’s our responsibility to fix it for future generations.
This fundraising effort is part of a bigger plan. They got the four-acre meadow last year and want to save more wild otters while also boosting biodiversity in Devon.
Besides being a wildlife haven, this land will also expand their otter rescue center. They’re planning to create a diverse habitat for many local species, including the Eurasian otters.
Webb mentioned they’ll plant over 500 native trees and set up a wildflower meadow to attract owls and other wildlife. Plus, they’ll add a large pond to invite even more creatures to the area.
After Christmas, they reached out to locals for natural Christmas trees. These trees will help enrich the otter cubs at the rescue center, providing them with new smells and natural shelters.
