The sudden shutdown of Calm Yoga in Derby has left many customers and investors feeling lost and financially strained
Derby: The closure of Calm Yoga has hit a lot of people hard. Customers and investors are left feeling pretty upset and out of pocket. The owners, Vanessa and Blair Davies, announced the closure due to “ongoing healthcare challenges.”
They opened the Derby studio back in 2019, following a successful launch in Burton. The place was known for its yoga classes, massages, and other wellness services. But now, it’s all come to a sudden halt.
In a message on their website, the Davies said they had to stop operations because of health issues. They promised that a professional company would handle everything related to the closure and that all creditors would be contacted.
Staffordshire Police are looking into the situation, and Action Fraud is involved too. Derby City Council has advised anyone affected to reach out to their Trading Standards Team. So far, they’ve received one complaint about Calm.
One investor, Zoltan Bujdoso, shared his story. He put in £11,000 of his life savings, hoping for a decent return. He wanted to support his wife and newborn son, but now he’s worried he might never see that money again.
Zoltan had bought a lifetime membership and was promised a 20% return on his investment. He thought it was a safe bet since the business had two studios. But after a few payments, communication from the company dried up.
Another affected person, Nicola Brown, worked for Calm for a year. She mentioned that payments stopped coming in November, leaving everyone in the dark. She’s owed around £800, but knows others are missing thousands.
There are rumors that the Davies have set up several companies linked to Calm Yoga, complicating the payment situation for teachers. Buckso Dhillon-Woolley, another teacher, said they’re owed hundreds for workshops they helped with.
Derbyshire Live tried to reach out to the Davies for comments but got no response. Their website stated that after ten years, they’re closing due to health challenges and focusing on recovery.
Derby City Council confirmed they haven’t received any complaints about Calm Yoga. They advised affected consumers to contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Service for help.
Derbyshire Police noted they received one complaint, but cases like this usually fall under the Insolvency Service’s jurisdiction. Meanwhile, Staffordshire Police are still investigating.
