Paignton’s main shopping street will see repairs as problematic trees are addressed after causing hazards for nearly two years
Paignton: So, there’s been a bit of a situation with some trees in the main shopping area. These pesky elms have been causing trouble for almost two years now. They’ve messed up the pavement on Victoria Street, and it’s been a real hazard for folks walking by.
People have been tripping over the uneven ground, and one poor soul even broke their shoulder! Can you imagine? The bright orange barriers around the trees have been an eyesore, too, and local businesses are pretty fed up with how long it’s taken to sort this out.
One local pointed out that planting elm trees without proper root barriers was a bad idea. They’re just too close to the buildings, and it’s causing all sorts of issues. The council even planted a new tree at the bottom of the street, which seems a bit odd given the mess with the others.
But good news is on the way! Those orange barriers are finally coming down soon, and work is set to start on the trees. A spokesperson from Torbay Council mentioned that they’re excited about the improvement plans for Victoria Street.
They’ll be doing the work during the winter when the trees are dormant. The roots have been causing the paving stones to lift, so they’ll prune them and put in a special membrane to prevent future issues. The trees aren’t going anywhere, but they will be trimmed back once the repairs are done.
