Residents of Llantwit Major are frustrated as Lidl’s plans for a new store face rejection, leaving them without affordable shopping options in their growing town.
The planning committee has been advised to reject the application, citing concerns about how it would affect the countryside’s look. But locals like Rhodri Hewitt are saying they really need a budget-friendly store like Lidl.
Rhodri, who tries to support local shops, admits that times are tough. He and his wife both work, but by the end of the month, money is tight. He mentioned that the other grocery options, like Co-op and Filco, just don’t cut it for many families.
Right now, he has to drive at least 10 miles to do his shopping, which is a hassle. Traffic can be a nightmare, especially on the way to Barry. With a growing population of around 14,500, Llantwit Major is feeling the strain, especially with new housing developments popping up.
Rhodri has seen the town change a lot over the years, but he feels it’s still lacking in services. He pointed out that there haven’t been any new shopping areas or even a petrol station. The council’s report on the Lidl proposal suggests it would disrupt the countryside’s character, which has many residents scratching their heads.
Despite the pushback, Rhodri says many locals support the Lidl plans. He’s clear that this isn’t about putting local shops out of business; it’s about having more choices for affordable shopping. It seems like the community is ready to stand up for what they need.
