A former MOD site in Wirral is set to transform into 249 homes for families
Wirral: This old Ministry of Defence site has been sitting empty for 20 years. But now, it’s finally getting a makeover with plans for 249 new homes.
The land used to be a fuel storage area, but it’s about to become a vibrant community. The council has already given the green light for the development, which is linked to more homes nearby.
While the exact sale price hasn’t been revealed, the site is valued at over £500,000. A recent report mentioned that selling this land, along with a few others, could bring in about £7.7 million for the local council.
This money will help pay off a government loan after the council had to ask for emergency funding a couple of years back. The decision to sell the site was made in March 2023, and it hit the market in January 2024.
Northstone Development, a company based in Manchester, is the one taking on this project. They’re all about creating great spaces where families can thrive, according to their website.
After putting the land up for sale, the council received 13 bids. Northstone was chosen as the preferred bidder because their offer matched the market value. However, there are still some planning details to sort out before they can start building.
Since the council bought this land with government funds, they’ll need to pay back some of that money from the final sale price. It’s been vacant for over two decades, so this development is a big deal for the area.
Planning permission was granted last November, and while some local councillors had concerns, many see this as a fantastic opportunity for regeneration. The first homes are expected to be ready by March 2026, with all 249 homes completed by 2032.
