A Derby school has been praised by Ofsted for providing a supportive environment that helps students regain confidence and succeed academically
Derby: A school in Derby is making waves with its fresh approach to education. Bridge Street School, which used to be Kingsmead School, is all about giving kids a second chance. Ofsted just gave it a thumbs up, rating it as ‘good’ across the board.
The inspectors were impressed with how the staff nurture the students. They create a safe space where kids feel valued. Small class sizes help students regain their confidence and improve their skills. It’s all about building trust and positive relationships.
Many of these kids have missed out on learning before coming here, so the school has smart systems in place to figure out where each student is starting from. They quickly identify any special needs, ensuring everyone gets the support they need.
With 63 students enrolled, the school has crafted a curriculum that mirrors what you’d find in a mainstream school. This helps students transition back to their home schools smoothly. The focus is on key knowledge and skills, which really helps the kids catch up.
Reading is a big deal here. They have a phonics program to help those who are just starting out. Plus, behavior improves significantly once students join. They learn to reflect on their actions and take responsibility, which is a game-changer.
Attendance is another area where the school shines. They use various strategies to help students show up regularly, and many see steady improvement. Personal development is also a priority, with lessons that prepare students for life in modern Britain.
Students enjoy hands-on activities like cooking and outdoor adventures, including climbing in the Peak District. The school also excels in careers education, with most students moving on to further education or jobs after they graduate.
To keep improving, the school aims to ensure staff have the skills to meet all students’ needs and to tackle attendance issues more effectively. Head teacher Libby Macpherson, who started in September 2023, is leading the charge.
