Derby: A new Repair Café is opening up in Mickleover Library later this month. It’s all about helping folks fix their stuff, from toasters to clothes. No need for appointments, just drop by and learn from the pros.

They’re really encouraging everyone to bring in items that need a little TLC instead of tossing them out. Volunteers will be there to lend a hand with small electrical repairs and sewing fixes.

If you’ve got a blender, kettle, or even a hairdryer that’s seen better days, bring it along. They can also help with sewing tasks like patching up holes or replacing buttons.

Councillor Sarah Chambers is excited about this new initiative. She believes it’ll create a friendly space for people to learn and share skills while promoting a more sustainable community.

She mentioned that the previous Repair Café at West End Community Centre was a hit, and she’s hopeful this one will be just as popular. She’d love to see it spread to other areas in Derby too.

By attending, you can save money and help the planet by reducing waste. Plus, it’s a great chance to meet new people and enjoy a coffee while picking up some handy repair tips.

One of the volunteers, Judith, is eager to share her sewing expertise. She loves sewing and wants to help others gain the confidence to fix their own items instead of throwing them away.

Judith reminisced about how her grandmother was a sewing whiz and how many people today lack those skills. She’s passionate about teaching others so they can tackle repairs themselves in the future.

It’s also a fun social event! You can just pop in, grab a coffee, and have a chat while learning something new.

The first Repair Café at Mickleover Library is set for Saturday, January 25, from 1:30 PM to 4:30 PM, and it’ll happen on the last Saturday of every month. No appointments needed, just drop in!

If you’re interested in volunteering, they’d love to hear from you. You can call Mickleover Library at 01332 647884 or shoot them an email at libraries@derby.gov.uk.
