Many selfless individuals will work on Christmas Day to ensure safety and support for others while sacrificing their own celebrations
Cardiff: Christmas is just around the corner, and while many are gearing up for festive fun, some folks in Wales will be working through the holiday. It’s a day like any other for them, but their commitment is what keeps the rest of us safe.
From healthcare workers to firefighters, these dedicated individuals are putting in long hours so that others can enjoy their celebrations. They’re the unsung heroes who make sure everything runs smoothly, even on Christmas Day.
Take Richard Byers, for instance. He’s a water assets controller and will be on duty from 6 am to 6 pm. He’s been with Welsh Water for 13 years and knows how important his role is. Missing out on family time is tough, especially when he has young kids at home. But he’s making the most of the days leading up to Christmas to celebrate with them.
Then there’s Sian Burton, an animal rescue officer. She’ll be working from noon to 8 pm, ready to respond to any calls about animal cruelty or neglect. Sian has been doing this for nearly two decades and understands that even on Christmas, animals need help. She’s dedicated to her job and wants to ensure that animals are safe, even if it means sacrificing her own holiday.
Carwyn Thomas, a fire service manager, will also be on duty. He’s been with the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service for 15 years. Carwyn tries to make the day special by inviting his family to visit him at the station. It’s a balancing act, but he knows the importance of being there for the community.
PC Hannah Jones, a dog handler with Dyfed-Powys Police, will be on the lookout for any emergencies. She’s been with the force for almost seven years and doesn’t mind working on Christmas Day. For her, it’s about ensuring everyone has a safe holiday.
Matthew’s House in Swansea will be serving Christmas dinner to those in need. Thom Lynch and his team are committed to making sure that no one goes without a meal on this special day. They’ve been doing this for years and it’s all about bringing joy to those who might otherwise feel alone.
And let’s not forget the lifeboat crew at Port Talbot RNLI. Clive and his son Joe will be on call, ready to respond to any emergencies at sea. It’s a family tradition for them, and they take pride in being there for others, even on Christmas.
Finally, the Wales Air Ambulance team will be on standby, ensuring that help is just a call away. They may be away from their families, but they create their own festive spirit at the base, making the best of their situation.
These individuals remind us that while we celebrate, there are many who are working hard to keep us safe. Their dedication is truly commendable, and it’s important to recognize their sacrifices this holiday season.
