A father honors his son, James Wilton, who died in Ukraine while volunteering
Huddersfield: A father is heartbroken after losing his son in Ukraine. James Wilton, just 18, died during a Russian drone attack while volunteering. His dad, Graham, remembers him as a polite and kind young man.
James left college to join international fighters in Ukraine. He wanted to help those affected by the conflict. Despite his family’s worries, he was determined to go. Graham supported him, wanting James to be prepared for what lay ahead.
James spent three months in Ukraine, training and making friends. He described those days as some of the best of his life. Sadly, his life ended during a drone strike in July. His friend Jason tried to save him but couldn’t.
On that tragic day, James and Jason were crossing open ground when they spotted a drone. They tried to run for cover, but it was too late. James was fatally injured, and Jason was also hurt while trying to help him.
Graham traveled 1,800 miles to attend his son’s funeral in Ukraine. It was an emotional journey, but he found comfort in meeting James’ comrades. He expressed gratitude for the support from the Ukrainian armed forces and the warm welcome from the people.
Graham hopes that sharing his son’s story will raise awareness about the situation in Ukraine. He believes that even in tragedy, there can be a chance for good.
