A Scottish independence supporter sparked outrage by questioning Denis Law’s Scottish identity after his passing
The person behind the post claimed Law was more Mancunian than Scottish since he never played for a Scottish club and publicly opposed independence. This comment came right after Law passed away at 84, after battling Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Law was born in Aberdeen and is tied for Scotland’s record international goalscorer. People quickly jumped in to defend him, pointing out his roots and contributions to Scottish football. One user said, “Born in Aberdeen. Lived in Aberdeen. Played 55 times for Scotland. He was plenty Scottish. Have some bloody respect.”
Despite the backlash, the original poster stuck to their guns, arguing that being a Scot means living in Scotland. They insisted Law was “British” but didn’t recognize that as a real place.
Law left Aberdeen at just 15 to join Huddersfield Town, later playing for big clubs like Manchester City and Manchester United. He once shared how moving to Huddersfield felt like going to another planet, but he always returned to his hometown.
He met his wife, Diana, at a dance in Aberdeen, and they raised five kids in Manchester. Law even had butteries sent from Aberdeen because he missed them so much.
Interestingly, he famously skipped the 1966 World Cup final to play golf instead, saying he couldn’t bear to hear about England’s win.
