A woman has been banned from keeping animals after neglecting her dog, Cookie, who suffered from severe health issues for weeks
Leeds: A woman named Abigail Barker has been banned from owning animals for seven years after neglecting her French Bulldog, Cookie. The poor pup suffered from severe skin lesions and a nasty ear infection.
During a court hearing, it was revealed that Cookie had been in a terrible state for weeks. Barker didn’t take her to the vet even when her condition worsened. Cookie was found with red, swollen skin and significant fur loss.
When an RSPCA officer visited, they noticed Cookie was alert but had obvious health issues. Barker claimed she had taken Cookie to the vet before, but didn’t follow up when the skin problems returned.
After another visit, it was clear Cookie’s condition had deteriorated. The vet found her skin was infected, and she was underweight. Barker said money wasn’t an issue, but she didn’t drive to get help.
Cookie was taken for urgent treatment, and the vet found her in a shocking state. She had visible ribs and bones, and her skin was covered in lesions. The vet noted that with proper care, Cookie could recover.
Sadly, the vet concluded that Cookie had suffered for at least four weeks due to Barker’s neglect. The injuries could have been avoided with regular vet visits and proper care.
In the end, Cookie was signed over to the RSPCA and has since been adopted by a loving foster family. Barker, who represented herself in court, expressed regret but didn’t think the situation was as bad as it seemed.
Now, she faces a community order and must complete rehabilitation activities. It’s a tough lesson, but hopefully, Cookie will have a much brighter future ahead.
