A Coventry man avoided jail after helping his sister steal over £50,000 from Sikh Youth UK charity funds
Coventry: A man named Kaldip Singh Lehal helped his sister, Rajbinder Kaur, steal over £50,000 from a charity called Sikh Youth UK. Surprisingly, he managed to avoid jail time.
During the investigation, Kaur used the charity’s funds to cover her personal debts. She was living beyond her means and had a whopping 50 bank accounts to hide the money trail.
Both siblings were found guilty of lying to The Charity Commission. Kaur got a two-year and eight-month sentence for theft and money laundering, while Singh Lehal received a suspended four-month sentence.
Protesters showed up at Birmingham Crown Court, claiming the case was unfair. Kaur was emotional as she left the court, insisting, “God is my witness.” The judge pointed out that she had created her own financial mess.
Singh Lehal, who has a history of drug dealing, was criticized for trying to intimidate the prosecutor. However, the judge acknowledged his efforts to turn his life around and help the community.
They started Sikh Youth UK in 2016 to support young people and raise awareness about social issues. But things went south when they failed to keep proper financial records, leading to the charity’s downfall.
Despite the chaos, the judge believed they had good intentions. Kaur had been struggling since losing her banking job in 2010, and her mental health issues contributed to the situation.
Singh Lehal, also known as Deepa Singh, has shifted from a life of crime to activism. Some supporters think he was targeted for his political views, especially after a raid on his home in 2018.
