County Durham: St Cuthbert’s Hospice is going through a rough patch. They’ve announced cuts to their adult bereavement service and laid off about 18% of their staff. It’s a tough blow for the community.

This hospice has been a lifeline for many, providing care for those with life-limiting illnesses and supporting families in grief for 36 years. Last year alone, they helped over 1,000 people, both in-house and in the community.

But now, they’re facing financial pressures that led to the heartbreaking decision to let go of 18 staff members. This means fewer resources for those needing bereavement support, with around 100 people losing access to these vital services.

Paul Marriott, the Chief Executive, expressed how painful this situation is. He mentioned that many of the staff who lost their jobs were dedicated professionals who had been with the hospice for years. It’s a real loss for everyone involved.

Even with a recent £100 million support package from the Government aimed at helping hospices, Marriott pointed out that this funding doesn’t cover salaries or running costs. They need more flexibility in how that money can be used.

Just before the Government’s announcement, the hospice revealed they were struggling with rising costs and a £1.3 million deficit. They rely heavily on donations and fundraising to keep their services running, needing to raise £3.8 million each year.

Despite the challenges, the community has rallied around the hospice, showing incredible support through donations and fundraising efforts. It’s heartwarming to see people come together in tough times.

Laura Barker, who heads income generation, thanked everyone for their generosity. She encouraged anyone wanting to help to reach out to the hospice for more information on how they can make a difference.
