Neath Port Talbot: The council is stepping up its game to tackle flooding. They just approved a plan to manage flood risks better, especially with all the crazy weather we’ve been having lately.

During a special meeting, they laid out a strategy to protect the area over the next six to seven years. It’s all about keeping homes and businesses safe from flooding.

In the last four years, the area has seen a spike in significant flooding events. Since 2020, around 300 properties have faced internal flooding, a big jump from just 130 in the previous seven years.

The council knows they can’t stop all flooding, but they want to be proactive. They’re looking at things like sustainable drainage systems and better flood defenses. Plus, they want to set up early warning systems to keep everyone informed.

They’re also planning to keep contributing to flood alleviation projects, helping with construction costs for both small and coastal projects.

The strategy outlines how they’ll manage risks from surface water and groundwater. They aim to improve resilience for communities and infrastructure across the borough.

Three areas—Neath, Briton Ferry, and Port Talbot—have been flagged as high-risk zones by Natural Resources Wales, along with 30 others in Wales.

Deputy leader Cllr Alun Llewelyn emphasized the importance of this report, especially with the recent extreme weather. He wants the community to engage in the consultation process to share their thoughts and experiences.

The draft plans are now ready for feedback from the public and stakeholders, and they’re also updating how they manage trees on council land. It’s all about making Neath Port Talbot safer for everyone.
