Gwent council is moving forward with plans for a camera car to tackle parking violations in Torfaen, awaiting final approval.
Gwent: So, the council is getting serious about parking issues. They’re looking to roll out a camera car to catch those pesky parking offenders in Torfaen.
They’ve put together a business case for this vehicle, and it’s just waiting for the green light from the council’s cabinet member. It’s been in the works since last year, and they’re finally making progress.
Back in March, they mentioned that they were considering this purchase, and now it seems like they’re almost there. The latest update says they fell a bit behind schedule, but the business case is ready to go.
Once it gets approved, they’ll start the process of getting the car. This camera car will be similar to one used in Newport, and it’s expected to patrol areas near schools to keep drivers from parking where they shouldn’t.
Right now, the council has four enforcement officers trying to cover all the schools, which is a bit of a stretch. Gavin Newman, the highways and traffic team leader, mentioned that most councils already have a camera car, and it could really help keep things in check around schools.
He estimates that getting the car and setting it up will cost between £30,000 and £50,000. Plus, the council is keen on working with the community to tackle illegal parking issues.
