Cornwall Council has admitted to a mistake regarding the closure of education centres, causing confusion among residents and officials alike
Cornwall: So, it turns out Cornwall Council really messed up. They sent out leaflets about adult education centres that were supposed to be closed, but the map they included had already removed those locations. Talk about a blunder!
A councillor was pretty upset when he got one of those leaflets. He even suggested that this whole situation should be looked at more closely by a committee. Just last week, the council’s own committee said they couldn’t back the closures in places like Camelford and Penzance.
Last month, a decision was made to close these centres after some public discussions. But now, they’ve hit pause while they chat with the councillors from those areas. It’s a bit of a mess, honestly.
Even with talks still happening, leaflets went out to thousands of homes showing only the centres that are safe. It’s like they jumped the gun on this one!
Cllr Tim Dwelly, who represents Penzance East, wrote to the council asking what the point of their engagement was if they were sending out misleading information. He’s clearly not happy about it.
A spokesperson for the council said the decision was made after talking to service users and providers, but they’re now revisiting it. They admitted the leaflets were sent out by mistake based on an earlier decision.
They also mentioned that adult education numbers haven’t bounced back since Covid, and with rising costs, keeping all seven centres open is tough. Some folks have called the proposal “vindictive” and “chaotic.”
