Derby: There’s a lot of worry about an ancient woodland called Chaddesden Wood. It could be in trouble if plans for 150 new homes go ahead. This nature reserve has been around since the 1600s, back when Queen Elizabeth I was queen.

Chaddesden Wood is a popular spot for walkers. Many people visit daily, especially in spring. It’s a lovely place for the community, providing a peaceful escape.

But now, there are concerns about the future of this woodland. Plans to build homes nearby have raised alarms among locals.

JGP Properties wants to build these homes on land next to the reserve. Over 1,400 people have objected to the plans, and a decision is expected soon.

Even though the homes won’t be built directly on the woodland, the Friends of Chaddesden Wood group is worried. They fear it could harm the wildlife and water supply.

Heather Bryant, the group’s chair, emphasizes the importance of protecting this ancient site. She points out that it’s vital for people’s well-being and wildlife.

She also mentions that if the fields around the wood are lost, it will become isolated. This could disrupt the movement of wildlife and their habitats.

Keith Tomlin, another member of the group, shares that they’ve received support from the community and beyond. He stresses that losing this woodland would be a huge loss.

The Friends of Chaddesden Wood have backing from various organizations and local politicians who oppose the housing plans.

JGP Properties argues that their development will meet local housing needs while protecting the woodland. They claim it will enhance biodiversity and create green spaces.

However, the Friends of Chaddesden Wood remain skeptical about these promises. They believe the woodland’s health will decline if the plans go through.
