Local leaders express outrage over Deputy First Minister’s remarks on quarry pollution
Councillors Janine Reed and Jan Jones are particularly shocked. They can’t believe Huw Irranca Davies suggested other councils should follow Caerphilly’s lead when it comes to handling the quarry. It’s like he’s ignoring the serious pollution issues that have been reported.
Cllr Reed pointed out that the council had received warnings about pollution from the quarry just this year. She’s frustrated that the minister seems to have forgotten about the hazardous materials found near where kids play. It’s a big deal, and it’s concerning that it’s not being taken seriously.
The councillors have also had a tough time getting answers from the council about the quarry. They feel like they’re being shut out and that their concerns aren’t being heard. Cllr Jones even mentioned that it seems like the council is making things up as they go along.
Reverend Paul Cawthorne, who works with a toxic waste research group, also expressed disappointment in the minister’s comments. He believes the issue is significant and needs more attention. The community is calling for the minister to meet with them directly to understand their concerns better.
The Welsh Government and Caerphilly Council have been asked for their take on this situation, but it’s clear that the community is feeling ignored and frustrated.
