We braved the chilly waters of Llandegfedd Reservoir for a refreshing dip
Pontypool: Last weekend, I took the plunge at Llandegfedd Reservoir. It was a cold water dip, and let me tell you, it was quite the experience!
Cold water dipping has really become popular lately, so we thought we’d give it a go in Gwent. The water sports center there offers courses and sessions for dipping.
A few weeks back, I signed up for the cold water induction course, but the actual dip got canceled because of some crazy 50mph winds from Storm Darragh. Talk about a bummer!
But I finally got my chance when the session was rescheduled, and I had a blast. The water was a brisk 7°C, so we only dipped for 7 minutes. They say to stick to a minute for every degree, so that made sense.
At first, I was panting and struggling to breathe, but after a couple of minutes, my body adjusted, and it felt way better. It’s wild how quickly you can get used to it!
Having someone else there made it even better. We chatted while we dipped, which really helped take my mind off the cold. It’s such a social thing, and there’s a great community around it at Llandegfedd.
The lifeguards were super friendly, and they have showers and changing facilities right by the dipping area. Plus, there’s a cozy café nearby where you can grab a hot drink and chat with fellow dippers after your swim.
Honestly, the dip left me feeling amazing and full of energy. I’d totally recommend it, especially at Llandegfedd. It’s safe, with lifeguards around, and the scenery is just beautiful.
Helen Tovey, who runs the induction courses, mentioned that people dip for all sorts of reasons, like mental health and fitness. She’s hoping to inspire more folks to join in.
They even offer an open water swimming induction to help people learn how to stay safe while dipping. They run sessions three days a week during winter, so there are plenty of chances to join in!
