A couple in Co Derry is devastated after a burglary stole their wedding savings
Bellaghy: A couple from Co Derry is feeling pretty shattered after their wedding money was taken during a break-in just before Christmas.
Ciara McGreevy was out shopping on December 12 when she got back home and sensed something was off. Her key wouldn’t turn in the lock, which raised her suspicions.
She thought maybe she had just broken the lock, but when her partner came home, he noticed more damage and realized money was missing. That’s when the reality hit them.
Ciara shared her experience with Belfast Live, saying she was just trying to enjoy her shopping trip. When she got home, everything seemed fine at first glance.
But then she noticed the lock looked tampered with. She called her partner, who was nearby, and decided to go inside anyway, even though it felt risky.
Once inside, everything looked normal until her partner found the smashed window in the back. That’s when they realized their wedding savings were gone.
They had just moved to the area, and this whole situation has left them feeling uneasy. Ciara expressed her feelings of devastation and fear, especially since they’re planning to get married in July 2026.
She had been saving for her wedding dress and other expenses, and now it’s all gone. They’re thinking about getting CCTV cameras to feel safer in their home.
Ciara’s sister, Eimear, started a GoFundMe to help with repairs and security. She explained how much damage was done and how the burglary has affected the couple.
A spokesperson for the PSNI mentioned they’re looking into the burglary that happened on Gulladuff Road. They’re asking anyone with information to come forward.
It’s a tough situation, and Ciara hopes no one else has to go through something like this. It’s a reminder of how quickly things can change.
