London: So, it turns out that Christmas traditions are getting a bit of a makeover. A lot of folks are saying they’ve had enough of certain customs. For instance, Christmas cards are at the top of the list for things people want to toss out. And those matching pajamas that everyone seems to love? Yeah, they’re not making the cut either.

Interestingly, one in five people are ready to say goodbye to festive tunes like Mariah Carey’s classic and Wham’s “Last Christmas.” While many still cherish traditions, a good chunk of people see the end of the year as a time to reflect and wish for good luck ahead. Plus, about 30% believe these traditions are family heirlooms passed down through generations.

Psychologist Jo Hemmings shared that even if we don’t fully buy into family superstitions, we still hold onto them because our parents did. They give us a sense of comfort, even if we know they’re a bit silly. Like, I know walking under a ladder is probably fine, but I still avoid it!

In a fun twist, one Amazon employee shared a unique family tradition of eating 12 grapes under the table for good luck. It’s a quirky way to ring in the new year!

Food traditions are also under fire, with Brussels sprouts getting the boot. Surprisingly, two-thirds of people planning a traditional Christmas dinner this year are skipping turkey altogether, and 18% think it should be banned. Instead, one in six are opting for pizza, while others are going for fish and chips or even kebabs!

Jo added that our traditions and superstitions are often passed down, and it’s fascinating to see how multicultural our society has become. Different customs are all around us, and that’s pretty cool!
