Lorna Spode, a beloved figure in North Staffordshire’s music scene, has died at 98, leaving behind a legacy of joy and talent.
Stoke-on-Trent: A remarkable woman known for her contributions to music has passed away. Lorna Spode, who lived in Hempstalls, was 98 years old. She had been battling dementia and recently succumbed to a chest infection.
Lorna’s health took a turn for the worse after her dementia diagnosis four years ago. She passed away just before her 99th birthday on January 10.
She was a music teacher and founded an all-ladies choir in 1970, which became quite famous. The Lorna Spode Consort won numerous awards, including being named BBC Radio Stoke’s Champion Choir.
Her husband, Ken, is still with us and will celebrate his 100th birthday in March. They were married for 71 years and had a beautiful family together.
The couple had two children, three grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Angela, their daughter, shared how tough it was to watch her mom decline, especially after the pandemic. They were prepared for the end, but it was still hard.
Angela mentioned that Lorna continued to entertain others at her care home until the very end. She was a self-taught musician who started playing the piano at just five years old.
Over the years, Lorna built a reputation for being a strong and opinionated leader in her choir. She had a knack for getting the best out of her singers, and many in the local music scene knew her name.
Besides her musical talents, Lorna was a devoted family woman. She loved spending time with her family, going on trips, and even enjoyed picking blackberries in the summer.
Her funeral is set for January 30 at Bradwell Crematorium, and those who wish to honor her memory can donate to the Dogs for Good charity.
