Ofsted raises serious concerns about child safety at Busy Bees Day Nursery
Weston-super-Mare: There are some big worries about the safety and care of kids at Busy Bees Day Nursery. Ofsted has flagged serious issues after their latest inspection.
This nursery used to be rated “Good” back in 2022, but after a recent check on November 14, 2024, it’s now marked as “Inadequate” across the board. That’s a huge drop!
The report says kids’ well-being is at risk because staff aren’t managing behavior well. Older kids were seen getting into fights over toys, and staff didn’t step in when they should have.
Inspectors pointed out that sometimes, staff just ignored physical fights, which means kids aren’t learning what’s acceptable behavior. That’s not good for their development.
Learning is also taking a hit. Staff seem out of touch with what kids can do and aren’t providing fun or challenging activities. The report mentions that some staff don’t even know what kids already know.
Supervision is another big issue. Kids were left waiting too long during meals, which made things noisy and stressful. In one case, kids went to the bathroom alone and struggled with heavy doors, leaving them stuck.
There was even a moment when preschoolers were running around with scissors, and staff didn’t handle it well. Instead of explaining why it was dangerous, they just carried the kids away.
On top of that, staff don’t seem to understand the educational framework they’re supposed to follow. They’re not giving kids enough chances to develop important skills like communication and creativity.
Parents and other professionals aren’t being brought in to help with developmental gaps, which is a missed opportunity for early support. This lack of action is holding kids back.
There are also serious safeguarding issues. While staff have had training, the culture at the nursery doesn’t prioritize kids’ safety, which is a major concern.
However, it’s not all bad news. The report noted that babies at the nursery are getting better care. Staff looking after them are attentive and really understand their needs.
In response to these findings, Busy Bees has a new management team working to fix the problems. They’re trying to improve monitoring and follow safety rules better, but there’s still a lot to do.
Ofsted has laid out some must-do actions for the nursery, like improving supervision during meals, training staff to manage behavior, and making sure the curriculum is followed properly.
This inspection came after concerns were raised about the nursery, and parents’ feedback was taken into account, though we don’t know the specifics.
Busy Bees Day Nursery was contacted for comments on January 3.
