Chard: The town is picking itself up after some serious flooding over the weekend. Storm Herminia really did a number on the area, leaving many roads blocked and businesses struggling.

Local shops took a hit, especially the Sainsbury’s supermarket, which was still closed on Monday after being flooded. Thankfully, the rain has eased up a bit, and things are starting to get back to normal, but some roads are still out of commission.

During the worst of it, the Guildhall opened its doors to help those affected. Volunteers jumped in to clear drains and help out wherever they could. Domino’s even provided free food for the volunteers, which was a nice touch that got a shout-out from local councillor Andy Webb.

Councillor Jason Baker shared his gratitude on Facebook, saying it was a tough day for many. He saw the damage firsthand and was out helping folks while coordinating with others to get support for Chard and nearby areas.

He mentioned the incredible community spirit, with people coming together to help each other out. The Guildhall was a refuge, and many donated food and blankets, which was heartwarming.

Local MP Adam Dance has also been busy, delivering sandbags to those in need. He expressed his sympathy for everyone affected and is working closely with local councils to ensure help is on the way.

As the cleanup begins, some parts of Chard are getting back to normal. The A30 is open, but the A358 is still heavily flooded, making it tough for drivers trying to get to Taunton.

Holyrood Academy is open, but Year 9 students can’t attend due to teacher shortages. The school is prioritizing younger and exam students for now.

While some businesses are back up and running, Sainsbury’s on Bath Street is still closed. They’re dealing with a lot of water damage, and roadworks are ongoing to help prevent future flooding.

Somerset Council is on the case, working to clear debris and repair roads. They’ve got sweepers in Chard and are covering the county to get things back in shape.
