Cardiff: Big news coming from Downing Street! Carwyn Jones, the former First Minister of Wales, is about to be made a life peer. He was in charge from 2009 until 2018, stepping down after a tough time following the tragic death of Carl Sergeant.

Carwyn has been a well-known figure in Welsh politics since devolution kicked off. He started as a Labour AM for Bridgend back in 1999 and kept that role until the 2021 elections.

After taking a break from politics, he went back to Aberystwyth University to teach law. He even started a podcast called ‘Carwyn Meets,’ where he chats with big names in business. Sounds interesting, right?

Now, becoming a life peer is a big deal. It means he’ll get to sit in the House of Lords. Most peers are picked by the monarch based on the Prime Minister’s advice.

Carwyn is one of 30 Labour peers chosen by Prime Minister Keir Starmer recently. Other notable names include his former chief of staff, Sue Gray, and ex-MP Kevin Brannan, who had roles in Gordon Brown’s cabinet. Quite the lineup!
