A careless van driver caused a serious accident, injuring a seven-year-old child on the A1, leading to legal consequences for the driver.
Newcastle: A family trip turned into a nightmare when a van driver made a careless move on the A1. The family was heading home after a day out at Holy Island when the accident happened.
As they approached a junction at Brownieside, a van driver named Brandon Davison was waiting to join the A1. He slowly moved forward but then pulled out right into the path of the family’s car.
The dad tried to dodge the collision, but it was too late. The impact was so strong that it sent their car crashing into a road sign. Sadly, the seven-year-old boy ended up with a fractured collarbone and had to stay in the hospital overnight.
The dad also got hurt from the airbag, suffering cuts and burns. Other drivers stopped to help, and Davison admitted he didn’t check both ways before pulling out. He left the scene but later claimed he didn’t realize a child was hurt.
Thanks to the dad taking a picture of his license plate, Davison was tracked down. When questioned by the police, he acknowledged he should have been more careful and accepted he was at fault. He thought he was insured to drive the van, but it turned out he wasn’t.
Davison, 25, pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by careless driving and driving without insurance. He received a community order, 100 hours of unpaid work, a year-long driving ban, and a fine of £330.
The judge, Carolyn Scott, pointed out how serious the accident was and how lucky he was that it wasn’t worse. His lawyer mentioned that Davison didn’t intend to leave the scene if he knew a child was injured, but the consequences could have been much more severe.
