Cardiff: Hundreds of people are expected to rally outside the Senedd. They oppose proposed cuts at Cardiff University. The cuts could affect 400 academic jobs and close several degree programs.

The University and College Union (UCU) is organizing the protest. They will be joined by students and other unions on February 4. This rally coincides with the Welsh draft budget debate.

UCU aims to demand better funding for education. They also plan to ballot for strike action against the proposed cuts. A mass walkout and marking boycott could happen this term.

Many staff received letters warning their jobs are at risk. The university’s vice-chancellor says they need to downsize to survive financially. However, UCU believes there are better options available.

Some degree programs, like nursing and modern languages, are at risk of closure. The university faces a £28 million deficit this year, partly due to rising costs and fewer international students.

The UCU branch condemned the cuts as unprecedented and unnecessary. They plan to fight against compulsory redundancies and consider a marking boycott if needed.

Staff were invited to briefings about the proposed changes. Many were left shocked and worried about their futures. The cuts could affect 7% of the academic workforce.

UCU’s financial analysis suggests the cuts are avoidable. They argue the university has enough cash reserves to manage its finances without drastic measures.

UCU President Dr. Joey Whitfield expressed disbelief at the cuts. He called for constructive discussions with university management, which have been lacking.

The UCU urges students to support their campaign, as their degrees will also be impacted. They want the Welsh Government to stabilize the university sector in the upcoming budget.

Bangor University UCU’s Dyfrig Jones highlighted the crisis in higher education. He stressed the need for government intervention to save jobs and support universities facing financial challenges.
