Lansdowne Primary School in Cardiff is set to relocate due to safety concerns over its aging buildings
Cardiff: A primary school in Cardiff is gearing up to move to a new site. The current buildings are falling apart, and safety is a big concern.
Lansdowne Primary School in Canton has been rated ‘D’ for its condition. Those old Victorian buildings are at the “end of life” stage. Even with some fixes, the problems just keep piling up.
The council has been keeping a close eye on the school, providing extra support. While they say the buildings are safe for now, the headteacher and staff are feeling the heat trying to manage all the ongoing issues.
It’s been a rough year, with the school shutting down four times already due to urgent repairs. We’re talking about leaks, water damage, and unsafe windows. It’s been a real hassle.
Experts say that while some risks can be managed, they can’t be completely wiped out. The repairs needed are extensive and would require a lot of money and disruption, making it impossible to keep students on-site.
Cardiff Council’s deputy leader, Cllr Sarah Merry, emphasized that the safety of everyone involved is the top priority. Keeping the school in its current spot just isn’t an option anymore.
They’ve looked into several relocation options, and they found a new site less than half a mile away that can fit all the students and staff comfortably.
If everything goes as planned, Lansdowne Primary School will move to the north of the Fitzalan High School site. The new place will have flexible classrooms, office spaces, and even a refurbished hall and dining area. The move is set for the end of October 2025.
The council will discuss the school’s condition and possible solutions at their meeting on January 23. Fingers crossed for a smooth transition!
