A car was impounded in West Cork after Gardaí found dangerously worn tyres resembling Formula 1 slicks during a routine traffic stop.
The police posted about it online, joking about the “slick” tires. Formula 1 racers use slick tires to help with grip on racetracks. However, slick tires are dangerous on normal roads.
Worn tires make turning harder and increase the risk of skidding. Punctures and aquaplaning also become more likely. The bad tires weren’t the only problem; the car’s tax and roadworthiness test were overdue.
The police took the car to the impound. They often see unsafe tires in Cork. One driver even used actual “slicks” while on drugs. Another car had a damaged spare tire that was not safe for high speeds and had also many poor repairs.
Still, other cases are worse. Once, a car stopped when a spanner pierced a tire. This bizarre event occurred near Bandon in 2020.
