West Midlands Police warns car owners of rising thefts targeting specific models
Birmingham: Drivers are being put on high alert as car thieves are getting smarter. The RAC has pointed out that these criminals are using advanced methods to bypass anti-theft systems. So, it’s time for car owners to step up their game too.
Recently, the RAC shared that as cars have become more tech-savvy, so have the thieves. They’re now using tricks like relay attacks to steal vehicles. The advice is pretty straightforward: keep an eye on your key fobs and think about where you park.
This warning is especially crucial for folks in Birmingham. West Midlands Police recently highlighted that certain car brands are being targeted more than others. They’ve noticed a spike in thefts of 4X4s, particularly the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux.
On December 18, the police traffic team took to social media to share their concerns. They urged owners of these models to consider extra security measures like steering locks and immobilisers.
It’s not just Birmingham facing this issue. Bedfordshire Police also raised alarms about SUV thefts, mentioning that popular models like Land Rovers and Range Rovers are being stolen for export.
According to recent stats, over 129,000 vehicles were stolen in the UK last year. That’s about 356 cars every single day! And sadly, most of these thefts go unsolved, so it’s crucial for drivers to do everything they can to protect their rides.
The RAC has shared some handy tips to help keep your car safe. First off, don’t just trust your key fob. Always double-check that your car is locked. Thieves can use jammers to trick your car into thinking it’s secure when it’s not.
Another big tip is to avoid relay attacks. These involve two thieves working together to capture your key signal from inside your home. To prevent this, keep your keys in a metal box or a signal-blocking wallet.
When parking, look for well-lit areas where your car is visible to others. If you’re at a busy shopping area, park close to other cars. And don’t forget to take your valuables with you!
Also, if your car has removable parts like a stereo, take those with you when you leave. Old-school deterrents like steering wheel locks are making a comeback too, so consider using them.
Lastly, be smart about where you keep your keys. Don’t leave them unattended in public, and when at home, keep them out of sight. It’s better to let a thief take your car than to risk your family’s safety.
And remember, don’t leave important documents in your car. If it gets stolen, those papers can make it easier for someone to sell your car and could even lead to identity theft.
