Some Cambridgeshire MPs are also serving as councillors, earning extra income while managing their parliamentary duties
Cambridgeshire: It turns out that since the last general election, the only extra work some MPs in Cambridgeshire have taken on is as local councillors. The latest financial interests register shows this clearly.
MPs can take on additional jobs as long as they declare them. Their second jobs are listed in the Register of Members’ Financial Interests, which gets updated every two weeks.
The latest register covers income reported up to January 20. A recent analysis revealed how much these MPs have earned from their extra roles since the election on July 4.
Only three MPs in Cambridgeshire have made money from a second job, and all of them are getting paid for their work as local councillors. Pippa Heylings, the Liberal Democrat MP for South Cambridgeshire, earned £3,162 from her role on the South Cambridgeshire District Council.
This amount includes her duties as a district councillor and chair of the Climate Change and Environment Committee. Charlotte Cane, another Liberal Democrat MP for Ely and East Cambridgeshire, earned £1,951 for her work on the East Cambridgeshire District Council.
Then there’s Sam Carling, the Labour MP for North West Cambridgeshire, who received £1,133 from Cambridge City Council for his role as a councillor. Together, these three MPs earned £6,246 from their council positions, which is a tiny fraction compared to what some other MPs make.
For instance, Nigel Farage, the leader of the Reform Party, has been juggling nine jobs and has earned a whopping £571,585 since the election. This includes a hefty sum for his show on GB News and various other roles.
While Cambridgeshire’s MPs are earning a modest amount, Farage’s earnings from multiple sources really put things into perspective. It’s interesting to see how different MPs balance their responsibilities and income.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s clear that some MPs are making a lot more from their side gigs than others. It’s a mixed bag out there!
