Efforts to preserve the beloved Ryton cafe continue after Gateshead Council rejects another planning application, leaving the community concerned.
Gateshead: The fight to save a local cafe is heating up. The Fed and Watered cafe, a popular spot in Ryton, is facing demolition after the council turned down its latest planning application. The owner, Joanne Stanton, is pretty bummed about it.
She’s been trying to keep the cafe open, even though it was built without the proper planning permission. The council claims the access to the cafe is dangerous, especially with a nearby play area and school. They’re worried about traffic and safety, which is understandable.
But Joanne argues that the cafe’s hours are set to avoid any issues. A highways consultant even said a one-way system could help ease the traffic concerns. It’s frustrating because they’ve tried to work with the council for ages, but it feels like they’re hitting a brick wall.
Despite the enforcement notice from May 2023, the cafe is still open. Joanne is determined to keep it running while they negotiate. She’s even reached out for a meeting with the council, but that request was turned down. It’s a tough spot for her and the community.
Local councillor Ron Beadle is also in the mix, saying the council should sit down with the cafe owners to figure out a way forward. He believes there are other businesses in the area that operate just fine without any accidents.
The cafe has a lot of support from the community, with a petition against its demolition gathering over 2,500 signatures. It was even voted the best breakfast spot by Chronicle readers this year. People really love this place!
Gateshead Council insists they’re just looking out for everyone’s safety. They’ve tried to work with the cafe owners but feel there’s no new information to consider. It’s a tough situation, and they’re ready to enforce the rules if necessary.
Joanne’s plea is simple: why close a valuable community resource when so many businesses are struggling? It’s a question that resonates with many, especially after the challenges of the pandemic.
