Residents demand solutions as heavy rains flood key roads in Stoke-on-Trent
Stoke-on-Trent: Community leaders and frustrated families are really pushing for action on roads that keep getting flooded. Leek New Road in Stockton Brook and Milton has been underwater after heavy rain, and it’s becoming a real hassle for drivers.
Baddeley Green Lane, especially near the A53 junction, has also been turning into a lake during storms. Local officials have told the city council that this ongoing problem is simply “not good enough.”
Ward councillors raised concerns after the roads were flooded on New Year’s Eve 2023, only to see the same situation happen again the next day. Reports showed drivers making U-turns to avoid the submerged Leek New Road near Braithwell Drive.
Some folks even chose not to drive through the flooded A53 on January 1. The flooding also affected Baddeley Green Lane and other nearby areas.
Conservative councillor Dave Evans reached out to the city council on December 31, 2023, saying these flooding issues have been around for years. It’s frustrating that a year later, the same roads are still facing the same problems.
Evans mentioned to StokeonTrentLive that he and another councillor have repeatedly brought up the flooding on the A53 and Baddeley Green Lane. While Stoke town is getting major investments to tackle flooding, it feels like the outskirts are being neglected.
Labour councillor Duncan Walker, who also represents the affected areas, acknowledged the situation and is in talks with council officers for a long-term fix. He noted that the recent flooding was due to heavy rain affecting much of the country, but they’re doing their best to respond quickly.
On January 6, Baddeley Green Lane was once again underwater, and highways crews were seen working to make it passable. This flooding has impacted many roads across North Staffordshire, even shutting down parts of the A34.
As heavy rain and melting snow caused chaos, flood warnings were issued. Now, with temperatures dropping and snow returning, the situation remains tricky. We’ve reached out to Stoke-on-Trent City Council about the ongoing flooding issues in Milton, Baddeley Green, and Stockton Brook.
