London: This weekend, fans of Call the Midwife are in for a treat as the new series kicks off. The show is back, and the residents of Poplar are facing fresh challenges.

During a chat about the upcoming 14th season, actresses Renee Bailey and Natalie Quarry shared some fun insights with BBC Breakfast hosts Charlie Stayt and Naga Munchetty.

As the interview wrapped up, Naga threw a quirky question their way: “Who was the last person to drop a baby on-set?” The actresses were clearly taken aback, gasping before they answered.

“I don’t think that’s ever happened,” Natalie said, while Renee chimed in, “That’s one thing everyone can agree has never happened, yet!”

Naga then asked if any model babies had been dropped, and both actresses laughed, saying, “No!” They explained that the model babies are treated with great care.

Renee mentioned that the model babies are surprisingly heavy, and Natalie agreed, saying, “They’re much heavier than real babies.”

Charlie asked if they could tell the difference between real and fake babies while filming. They admitted it’s tough because the models look so lifelike.

Natalie shared that Renee had a hard time at first, saying, “In the beginning, they look really real, it’s quite scary. You’re like, ‘Who left the baby on the counter?’”

They also talked about how they learn about the show’s plotlines. Natalie revealed that the cast receives scripts one episode at a time.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen at the end of the season, so it’s like a little present every time I get that email with the script,” she said, excitedly wondering, “Oh god, what’s going to happen?!”

Mark your calendars! Season 14 of Call the Midwife premieres on BBC One on Sunday, January 5, 2025, at 8 PM. The synopsis hints at a storyline involving a pregnant teenager and some chaotic demonstrations.

Catch BBC Breakfast weekdays on BBC One starting at 6 AM.
