Ammanford: A Senedd member wants schools to hire security guards. This follows a serious incident where teachers were stabbed by a student.

Cefin Campbell, a member of Plaid Cymru, spoke up after the attack at Ysgol Dyffryn Aman. The deputy head teacher and another teacher were injured, along with a student. The attacker has been found guilty of attempted murder.

After the trial, Ms. Elias, one of the injured teachers, said no teacher should fear for their safety. She plans to meet with local officials to prevent future incidents. She emphasized that violence against staff is unacceptable.

Mr. Campbell mentioned that searching students could help. However, he questioned if teachers want to take on security roles. He noted that teachers are trained to educate, not to handle confrontations.

He stressed the need for a serious discussion about increasing violence in schools. Hiring security guards could be a solution. He suggested retired police officers might be suitable for this role.

When asked about metal detectors, he said they don’t want to follow the American model. Still, he believes schools need stricter measures to ensure safety.

Mr. Campbell expressed relief that the trial is over. The community felt shock after the attack, especially since it involved a young student. He noted that fear among teachers remains until effective safety measures are implemented.
