A committee of MPs urges the UK to adopt AI strategies used by Ukraine in warfare
London: A group of MPs is saying that Britain should take a page from Ukraine’s playbook when it comes to using AI in warfare. They pointed out how Ukraine is using AI tech in drones to gather intelligence and fight against Russian forces. The Commons’ Defence Committee believes the UK is lagging behind.
They mentioned that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) really needs to step up its game. Right now, AI in the UK is “under-developed” and needs some serious attention. Emma Lewell-Buck, one of the MPs, emphasized that AI is here to stay, and the UK has to act quickly to keep up.
She highlighted that Ukraine’s use of AI gives them a significant edge in military operations. As AI technology gets better, it’s going to change how defense works, from the office to the battlefield. The MPs are calling for the MoD to become an “AI-native” organization, fully integrating AI into everything they do.
They believe the MoD should see AI as a key part of solving problems and achieving goals, not just a side project. This includes using AI for both frontline missions and behind-the-scenes tasks.
The committee thinks the UK has the potential to develop a top-notch defense AI sector. However, they warned that the MoD should focus on specific applications of AI instead of trying to compete with tech giants like China and the USA.
Emma Lewell-Buck, who represents South Shields, pointed out a disconnect between what the MoD says about AI and what it actually does. While they talk about the importance of AI, there hasn’t been much action to back it up. With global threats increasing and technology evolving quickly, the MoD needs to get moving.
She also mentioned that the Government’s strategic defense review is a chance for ministers to figure out how the MoD can leverage AI. This review, commissioned by the Prime Minister, is expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.
