Bristol plans a new bike lane and wider pavement to promote walking and cycling to the upcoming YTL Arena, addressing traffic worries.
Originally, the arena was set for a site next to Bristol Temple Meads. Now, it will be at the former Filton Airfield, over five miles from the city center. Google Maps shows it takes about two hours to walk there from downtown Bristol. Cycling would take around 38 minutes.
Bristol City Council hopes some people will still walk or cycle to the arena. They plan changes along Charlton Road in Brentry, a key route south of the airfield. The council consulted the public about these plans last spring. However, it’s unclear when construction will start.
An update on the Charlton Road plans will be shared with councillors on February 6. The proposals include segregated bike lanes, wider footpaths, and improved crossing facilities. These changes aim to promote active travel on event days and improve local health.
The plans also include parking restrictions to keep traffic lanes clear. Most homes have off-road parking, and parking near shops will remain to support local businesses. Changes will stretch from the top of Charlton Road to the Pen Park Road roundabout.
Some areas will have a two-way bike lane, while others will have shared paths for cyclists and pedestrians. This shared use has raised concerns among both groups. One survey respondent noted that shared paths can be dangerous for pedestrians.
Another respondent criticized the design, saying it wastes money and lacks proper space for cyclists. They expressed frustration over shared paths, which can be challenging for those commuting. Overall, the feedback highlights the need for clear separation between cyclists and pedestrians.
