Brenda Blethyn reflects on her decision to leave Vera, hinting at potential future projects while prioritizing family time.
Ramsgate: So, Brenda Blethyn, the star of Vera, is stepping away from the show after 14 seasons. She’s been at it for a long time, and now she wants to spend more time with her family. It’s a big change for her.
At 78, she’s ready to hang up that iconic hat and coat. Brenda almost quit after the last series but decided to do two more episodes to wrap things up nicely. It’s bittersweet for her.
As filming wrapped, she admitted she might regret leaving. But she’s also clear that family comes first. Being away for six months each year was tough, and she’s looking forward to being home more.
Brenda isn’t done acting, though. She’s already jumped into another film project, even if it’s in Yorkshire, which is still a bit of a trek from home. She just couldn’t resist the opportunity.
She shared that she stepped in to help out when another actress had to drop out. It seems like the acting bug is still strong in her, even if she’s taking a step back from Vera.
When asked about a possible return as DCI Vera Stanhope, she didn’t completely shut the door. She feels good about her decision now but knows she might miss it when the time comes to film again.
Brenda said, “I’m not retiring, maybe just semi-retired.” She wants to avoid long shoots away from home, but she’s keeping her options open. It’s all about balance for her.
Vera’s final episodes will air on ITV1 and STV on January 1 and 2, with a special documentary following on January 3. Fans can catch up on earlier seasons on ITVX.
