Bradford faces a 9.99% Council tax increase after Government approval triggering criticism from MPs and local politicians citing financial mismanagement.
People and politicians did not like this idea. The Council said they were in money trouble. They said this decision was hard to make. The Government then allowed a 9.99 percent increase.
Bradford Council got “exceptional financial support.” This helped them manage their money issues. They can borrow money and sell things for income. This income will fund local services.
Borrowing money means paying interest later. The Council thinks more Council tax income helps. It would let them borrow less money overall. This would lower interest payments down the road.
Robbie Moore is the local MP. He criticizes the Council tax increase. He thinks it hurts working families. Moore feels taxpayers are being insulted. He wants the Council to fix its issues.
Rebecca Poulsen leads Tories on the council. She felt many were shocked by the large request. She says the Council mismanaged public funds a lot. The leader’s idea of a good increase sounds wrong to her.
The Council has wrong priorities, she thinks. Bradford having the highest tax increase is bad. Mike Pollard questioned if it was only for one year. He thinks tax increases become permanent easily.
The Green party thinks the tax rise is shameful. They say people are paying for the Council’s failures. Neil Whitaker of the Green Party feels this is unfair.
Brendan Stubbs leads the Liberal Democrats. He states the Council blames everyone but themselves. He feels the Government is hurting residents. He considers the situation shameless too.
